1951 356 Pre-A Coupe

A pretty penny for a bit of patina

While every other 356 to cross the block yesterday sold below auction estimates, but within expectations, this 1951 356 Pre-A Coupe was the one that bested them all. And yes, I do have the correct picture above.

Originally finished in Adria Blue, as you can clearly see from the area around driver’s side light, this 356 was repainted Maroon at some point and now wears “a remarkable, hard-earned patina developed over decades of use.” At some point the interior was stripped bare and equipped with a single racing bucket seat and “period” roll bar along with a 1600 engine from a 356B out back.

Over the last twelve months Pre-A Coupes have averaged $140,500 with a low of $18,356 for a rolling project and a high of $235,200 for a beautiful Super Coupe sold at Amelia last year. Against an auction estimate of $100-150,000, our Spotlight car hammered at a final bid of $195,000, $218,400 with buyer’s fee. A number not too far off our twelve-month high, for a car that looked more like our twelve-month low. But I guess you can’t recreate patina, can you?
