1959 356A Convertible D

This long-held family car crushed the competition

The 356A Convertible D was produced for just one year in 1959 as the successor to the 356 Speedster. While it retained the Speedster’s low-slung profile and minimalist dashboard, the Convertible D was designed as a more premium and practical model. Built by Drauz of Heilbronn—hence the “D” designation—it introduced features such as roll-up side windows, a more durable convertible top, and a taller windshield that offered more headroom, though it remained easily removable. Inside, Porsche fitted more comfortable seats and door panels with integrated storage, reflecting its higher $3,695 price tag compared to the Speedster. With just 1,330 examples produced, the Convertible D bridged the gap between the Spartan Speedster and the 356B Roadster that followed.

This Ruby Red 1959 356A Convertible D has been in the current owner’s family since 1971 and shows 68,000 miles. A multi-year refurbishment began in the 2000s and was completed in 2020, during which the car was repainted, fitted with a replacement beige soft top, and reupholstered in tan leather. Earlier work included floor pan replacement and rust repair to the body and battery box in 1990. Power comes from a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four rebuilt by Vic Skirmants’ 356 Enterprises of Michigan in 2009, paired with rebuilt dual carburetors. Recent service included a tune-up and new battery, making this long-held family car a very nice example of a Convertible D.

Over the past twelve months, 356A Convertible D models have averaged $154,700, with sales ranging from a low of $94,366 to a high of $215,000. That $215,000 result belonged to a Black over Tan example retaining its numbers-matching engine. Our Spotlight car, despite having a replacement engine, crushed that mark, setting a new high with a number we haven’t seen since the peak of the market in 2022. Very well sold.
