1968 911L Coupe 5-Speed
This single-year-only 911 was a rare one, more ways than you think

The 1968 Porsche 911L was a one-year-only model created primarily for the U.S. market when the higher-performance 911S could no longer meet new emissions regulations. Positioned between the standard 911 and the S, the 911L paired the 2.0-liter flat-six producing 130 horsepower with many of the S-model’s chassis upgrades, including ventilated disc brakes and improved suspension components. True to its “Lux” name, the model also featured upgraded trim and interior appointments, often including velour upholstery and S-style exterior details such as fog lights. Produced only for the 1968 model year, roughly 1,600 examples were built, making the 911L a unique and relatively rare bridge between early short-wheelbase 911 variants.
This 1968 911L Coupe 5-Speed was finished in Polo Red over Black leatherette and showed 35,000 miles. The car was repainted some time ago and has seen several mechanical updates over the years. The 2.0-liter flat-six was rebuilt in 1992, while the five-speed manual transaxle was rebuilt more recently in 2017. Work in 2025 included adjusting the wheel bearings, rebuilding the brake calipers, and replacing the pads, rotors, and brake lines.
Over the past twelve months only two 911L Coupes, both Bahama Yellow, have crossed the block with one selling for $78,000 while the other was bid to $65,500. Our Spotlight car was in decent condition, but the finish was showing some wear and a number of details were incorrect for the model year and the “L” model. It failed to sell at a final bid of $59,000, which in my opinion was in the money.
