1971 914
Tons of work, but not a ton of money for this 1.7-liter 914

Introduced for the 1970 model year, the 914 1.7 served as Porsche’s new entry-level sports car, replacing the 912 while slotting below the 911 in the company’s lineup. Developed jointly with Volkswagen, it featured a lightweight mid-engine chassis, removable Targa roof, and a 1.7-liter flat-four producing 80 horsepower. While modest on paper, its excellent balance, nimble handling, and low curb weight made the 914 one of the best-handling sports cars of its era.
This 1971 914 came finished in its factory shade of Bahia Red over a Black vinyl interior and showed 66,000 miles. Equipped with the desirable Appearance Group Package and 15-inch Pedrini alloy wheels, it underwent an extensive refurbishment that included replacing the floor panels, refinishing the body in its original shade, overhauling the 1.7-liter flat-four, servicing the five-speed transaxle, and rebuilding the alternator and starter. The seller also replaced numerous suspension, braking, fuel system, and weather seal components. A four-page spreadsheet detailing the parts used, along with restoration photos documenting the work, was included in the gallery.
Over the past twelve months, 1.7-liter 914 values have averaged $16,500, with a low of $1,500 and a high of $72,000 for a Gold Metallic example sold in May of this year. Given the extensive refurbishment completed since the seller purchased the car in 2019, I expected our Spotlight Car to land somewhere in the upper end of the market. Instead, it hammered at a final bid of $22,500. To me, that’s quite the deal for a well-sorted, Appearance Group 914.
