1972 911S Targa

A new twelve-month high for the "famous" '72 911S Targa

You’ve probably never heard of David Glenn unless you’re deeply immersed in the air-cooled Porsche world, but within those circles he was absolute royalty. Glenn entered Porsche motorsport in the mid-1970s, working with Kremer before moving to Germany in 1985 to become director of engine building at RUF Automobile GmbH. There, alongside Alois Ruf Jr., he was instrumental in developing the 3.4-liter twin-turbo flat-six that powered the legendary RUF CTR, forever known as the “Yellowbird.” Glenn personally built and documented the engines for all 29 CTRs, a reflection of both his meticulous nature and technical mastery. By the time the Yellowbird stunned the world in Road & Track’s 1987 “World’s Fastest Cars” test, Glenn had cemented his place as one of the most influential and respected figures in Porsche performance history.

Restored by the late David Glenn at approximately 651,000 miles for its original owner, this 1972 911S Targa is a special car by any measure. Finished in its original Gemini Blue Metallic over Black leatherette and affectionately nicknamed “BluBell,” it was later featured in the July 2016 issue of PCA’s Panorama magazine. The sale included extensive documentation, awards, and a gallery full of detailed photos, underscoring both the quality of the restoration and the significance of Glenn’s involvement.

Over the last twelve months we’ve only seen two 911S Targas sell online, one at $106,500 and another at $150,911 for a very strong Signal Yellow example in November. Our Spotlight car stood apart, and it showed in the result, selling at a final bid of $177,000, $189,390 inclusive of buyer’s fee. A great outcome for a wonderful car with an exceptional history.
