1980 930 Gemballa Version II

An '80s icon brings solid money among modified 930s

Founded by Uwe Gemballa in 1981, Gemballa quickly earned a global reputation for crafting some of the most radical and exclusive automotive creations. Based in Leonberg near Stuttgart, the company became synonymous with extravagant design and technical innovation, especially through its iconic Avalanche series of Porsche-based supercars. Gemball’s groundbreaking modifications pushed the boundaries of performance and aesthetics, establishing it as a leader in high-end tuning.

This 1980 911 Turbo is the first of just nine Gemballa Version II conversions and the only Coupe among them, making it a true one-off in the legendary tuner’s portfolio. Built in the mid-1980s and featured in Gemballa’s period advertising, it showcases the signature Version II upgrades, including a bespoke front spoiler with integrated lighting, updated side sills and rear bumper, and a Gemballa stainless steel exhaust. The interior is finished in custom black and white leather with Recaro Idealsitz C seats, unique piping, and a period-correct Pioneer audio system with Nakamichi speakers and a Z box. The car still sports its original Pirelli P7 tires (yikes), and remains in highly original, unrestored condition with 71,654 km (~44k mi) and comes with extensive documentation, including its original European title and promotional materials.

‘80s Gemballa Turbos of any variety are few and far between, with only one other car in my records being a 1986 Gemballa 3.4-liter that sold for $139,000 back in August of 2023. With your run-of-the-mill modified 930s averaging $147,000 over the last twelve months, the $181,500 paid seems about right for a piece of ‘80s tuner history.
