1981 911SC Coupe

Runnin' with the Devil

Introduced in 1978, the Porsche 911SC (“Super Carrera”) was meant to be the swan song for the 911 line as Porsche planned to replace it with the new 928. Instead, the SC helped secure the 911’s future by broadening its appeal through improved reliability, everyday usability, and classic Porsche performance. Powered by a naturally aspirated version of the 930 Turbo’s engine, the 911SC offered a more approachable alternative to the 911 Turbo while retaining the signature character and handling of the 911. Sold globally, it became one of Porsche’s first truly international models, keeping the 911 spirit alive during a pivotal moment in the brand’s history.

Like I said last week, if this 1981 911SC Coupe could talk, I bet it would have some wild stories. Originally owned by the former wife of Eddie Van Halen, it later was acquired by his brother, and Van Halen drummer, Alex. The seller purchased it in 2018 and set about freshening things up with a refinish of the Light Blue Metallic paint, a reupholstered black leather interior, and mechanical attention that included new brake components, tires, clutch, fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, and spark plugs. A November 2022 Carfax entry does note “minor damage,” but overall, this SC presents as a very nice example with a rock & roll history to match its iconic looks.

Over the past twelve months, SC Coupes have averaged $62,100, with a low of $19,251 and a high of $140,911 for a 25,000-mile example sold in May of this year. Comps put our Spotlight car in the $50,000 to $70,000 range, but the story helped it hit that high of $70,000. Such a cool car.
