1981 911SC Targa

Higher HP and tons of service set this 911SC Targa up for the win

Introduced in 1978, the 911SC “Super Carrera” featured a 3.0-liter flat-six engine paired with a 915 transmission. While all U.S.-spec 911SCs were rated at 180 horsepower, later 1980–1983 Rest of World (ROW) cars produced approximately 204 horsepower, thanks to a 9.8:1 compression ratio and the larger ports carried over from early ROW SC engines. These are considered among the most desirable G-body engines due to their reliability and the notable horsepower gains achievable through mild upgrades.

This 1981 911SC Targa is one such ROW example. Originally a German-market car, it was imported to the U.S. in the mid-1980s and has been with the current seller since 1996. Finished in Guards Red over a Black vinyl and microsuede interior, the car shows 140,000 miles on a replacement odometer and has received extensive service under current ownership. Notable work includes a top-end overhaul of the 3.0-liter flat-six, replacement of bearings and synchronizers in the five-speed manual transaxle, refurbishment of the Targa roof panel, reupholstery of the seats in Black vinyl and microsuede, and the installation of a Bursch catalytic converter bypass along with Dansk heat exchangers. More recently, the alternator and battery were replaced in January of this year, and 2024 compression test results are included in the gallery. Visually, the car appears to be in nice condition with typical wear, though a 2022 incident involving a signpost is noted on the CarFax.

Over the past twelve months, 911SC Targas have averaged $52,700, with a low of $25,000 and a high of $93,000 for a 33,000-mile example sold in March of this year. Comparable cars placed this one in the $25,000–$35,000 range due to its mileage, but the extensive service history helped it bring a final bid of $46,000. Well sold—and well worth it.
