1987 928 S4 5-Speed

The year of the 928 continues

Introduced in 1987, the Porsche 928 S4 marked a significant evolution over the earlier 928 and 928 S models. While it retained the front-mounted V8 and transaxle layout that defined the model, the S4 featured a revised 5.0-liter V8 with four-valve-per-cylinder heads, boosting output to 316 horsepower—up from the 288 hp found in the previous 928 S. Visually, the S4 introduced a more aerodynamic front and rear fascia with integrated bumpers, smoother lines, and a distinctive rear wing molded into the hatch. Improvements to braking and cooling systems, along with refinements in interior comfort and electronics, made the S4 more capable both as a grand tourer and high-speed cruiser. The result was a more refined, more powerful 928 that moved the model further upscale.

This 1987 928 S4 came finished in Guards Red over a Black leather interior and showed just 19,594 miles on the odometer. The car wears 17” Augment Phone Dial wheels and the sale included a set of the original 16” Flatdishes (Flatdish < Phone Dials 😍). The car looks to be in very nice condition with plenty of detailed photos in the gallery including paint meter readings and service records. A very nice example of Porsche’s Grand Tourer.

Our Spotlight car has had quite the auction history, crossing the online block four times in the last twenty-one months with three out of those four runs ending in a no sale, and that single “sold” listing hitting $59,000 in August of 2024. With average prices at $43,400, and this being an above average example, comps put it at $55-70,000. It sold this time around at a final bid of $75,000. Solid result for a nice example. About time.
