1988 959 Sport
A rare bird fails to hit reserve

A true marvel of automotive engineering, the Porsche 959 Sport took the already groundbreaking 959 to an even more extreme level. Built in exceptionally limited numbers, just 29 examples out of the 292 total 959s produced, the Sport variant was a purist’s dream. While still retaining the 959’s revolutionary technology, the Sport version shed 220 pounds compared to the Komfort model by ditching adaptive suspension, air conditioning, and the stereo in favor of a more focused driving experience. Along with a lack of comfort equipment, buyers had only one choice to make—Grand Prix White or Guards Red—but regardless of color, the 959 Sport remains one of the most sought-after and exclusive Porsche models ever built.
This 1988 959 Sport was the 16th of the 29 built and came finished in Grand Prix White with color-matched wheels over a Grey cloth interior. It showed just 3,757 miles on the odometer, looked to be in pristine condition, and was well documented since new with original order correspondence, original bill of sale, owner’s manual, period photos, and service records. If there was one to have, it would be this one.
It’s been a looooong time since we’ve seen a 959 Sport auction with the last example to cross the block failing to sell back in August of 2019 after the sale of an 11,000-mile example for just over $2m in February 2017. Our Spotlight car failed to sell at a high bid of $4,900,000, which was right there, as it now has an asking price of $5.5m over on RM’s website.
