1992 928 GTS

Did Green on Green bring the Green?

The 928 GTS, produced from 1992 to 1995, represented the final and most powerful evolution of Porsche’s front-engine grand tourer. Power came from a 5.4-liter V8 producing 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, good for a top speed of around 171 mph. Visually, the GTS is easily identified by its wider rear fenders, body-colored rear spoiler, and full-width rear light bar, along with 17-inch “Cup” wheels and larger brakes. Blending serious performance with improved interior refinement and comfort, the GTS became the ultimate expression of the 928 before production ended in 1995.

This 1992 928 GTS came finished in Wimbledon Green Metallic over a matching Wimbledon Green leather interior and showed 85,000 km (~53k miles). A rest-of-world example, it was reportedly first owned by Porsche works driver and race director Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and was acquired by the seller in Germany in 2018 before being imported to the United States. Service in 2024 included overhauling the air-conditioning system, replacing the tires, rear brake pads and rotors, and renewing ignition components including the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor, along with the front hood shocks. The gallery featured hundreds of detailed photos along with paint meter readings and a pile of service records. A very nice example in one heck of a color combo.

Over the past twelve months, 928 GTS values have averaged $114,100, with a low of $28,282 and a high of $269,000 for a 9,000-mile 5-speed example finished in Midnight Blue Metallic. Our Spotlight Car had plenty going for it with a great color, recent service, and an interesting original owner. But, and it’s a big but, it was equipped with the four-speed automatic. Estimates put it in the $59,700–$91,400 range, which is exactly where it landed, hammering at a final bid of $80,000. Had this been a 5-speed, easily double the money.
