1994 RUF BTR4 Coupe

This rare RUF failed to sell, but was the number even close?

The RUF BTR traces its roots to 1983, when RUF transformed the Porsche 911 into the Gruppe B Turbo RUF, a high-performance model offered in either narrow-body form or an optional wide-body layout similar to the 930 Turbo. Built with RUF’s own engineering rather than simple aftermarket modifications, the early BTRs established the company’s reputation for creating road-legal machines with race-bred performance. A later evolution, the BTR4, arrived in the mid-1990s based on the 964 Carrera 2 and featured a 3.8-liter turbocharged flat-six, marking a major leap in power and refinement while maintaining the BTR’s signature blend of Porsche foundations and RUF’s in-house performance innovation.

This 1994 RUF BTR4 Coupe is one of just nine all-wheel-drive, 964-based examples built and was delivered new to Japan before being imported to the US in 2019. Showing 33,000 miles on its converted odometer, it came finished in Polar Silver Metallic over Black and was customized in 2024 with Sport seats and rear jump seats trimmed in blue Studio Check fabric. The engine was removed that same year for significant mechanical attention, including new seals and gaskets, a fuel pump, battery, and spark plugs. Invoices from Rstrada totaling more than $88,000 accompany the car, underscoring the level of recent investment.

We haven’t seen another W09-VIN RUF BTR4 cross a public auction block before, so comps are essentially nonexistent. This same example was previously offered by Merit Partners in Atlanta for $1,290,990 and later appeared in RM Sotheby’s Sealed Drop back in September, though the high bid from that sale remains unknown. Here, our Spotlight car failed to sell at a final bid of $640,000. I expected something closer to $800,000 given the rarity, spec, and recent mechanical investment.
