1997 911 Carrera Cup 3.8 RSR

Always a $1m car, but not far enough over $1m to take her home

The 993 Carrera Cup 3.8 RSR represents the ultimate air-cooled racing evolution of the 993 generation, built in extremely limited numbers (~45) for top-tier customer teams. Powered by a 3.8-liter M64/75 flat-six producing around 350 horsepower, it paired high-revving performance with a lightweight, stripped-out chassis and a wide-body design derived from the GT2. With its welded roll cage, adjustable aero, race-spec suspension, and center-lock wheels, it was purpose-built for endurance competition. Widely regarded as one of the last true factory-built air-cooled race cars, the 3.8 RSR stands at the peak of analog 911 motorsport development.

This 1997 911 Carrera Cup 3.8 RSR was finished in Glacier White over a Black cloth interior and showed just 8,000 km (~5k miles) on the odometer. Delivered new to Japan, it was used in Porsche Club events at Suzuka and Fuji before spending two decades in the UK and arriving in the U.S. in 2019. Between 2021 and 2022, nearly $200,000 in work was carried out by Canepa, including the addition of electric air conditioning, power windows, carpets, and door panels, along with mechanical updates such as a new clutch and alternator. More work has been carried out since making this a very well-prepared example, and the lowest mileage example we’ve seen in years.

As you can imagine, with roughly 45 built, comps are few and far between. The last example to cross the block was a raced example that brought $224,000 in August of last year. To find a high, one would have to look all the way back to March of 2016 when a 6k km example sold for $935,000 at Amelia. The market has moved quite a bit since then, so a bid over $1m was certainly expected. But it looks like the seller was expecting more than just $10,000 over $1m as our Spotlight car went unsold at a final bid of $1,010,000.
