1997 911 Carrera S Vesuvio Edition

This rare 993 set a new twelve-month high, but was there more there?

The 993 Carrera S Vesuvio Edition was a Porsche Exclusive special built in extremely limited numbers, widely cited at around 60 cars total, and is instantly recognizable by its Vesuviometallic paint, a subtle grey with a violet hue that shifts in different light. Based on the widebody Carrera S with Turbo bodywork, it paired that aggressive stance with Steel Grey accents on the mirrors, door handles, and split rear grille, along with distinctive interior options. As one of the rarest factory 993 variants and part of the final air-cooled generation, the Vesuvio Edition sits firmly in collector territory.

This 1997 911 Carrera S Vesuvio Edition was finished in the customary Vesuvio Metallic with Steel Grey accents and featured a Leather-to-Sample Boxster Red interior. It showed approximately 44,000 kilometers (~28k miles) and presented as a very clean example, with a gallery full of detailed photos including paint meter readings. Modifications were limited to an aftermarket phone mount and an upgraded Porsche Classic Communication Management system, while service history was light beyond an oil change performed in preparation for the sale.

Over the past twelve months Vesuvio Editions have averaged $204,000, with a low of $165,000 and a high of $243,000 for a 62,000-mile example. With this car’s low mileage and desirable Boxster Red interior, I had it in the $250-270,000 range, and while it didn’t push to the top of that band, it did land comfortably within it, selling at a final bid of $255,000. Well bought in my book, though I’ll admit I’m a bit biased when it comes to Vesuvio cars.
