1997 911 GT2 R Project

A case of "pass the potato" as this Project brought the same price almost a year later

The 993 GT2 R was the pure racing evolution of the road-going GT2, developed for privateer teams competing in international GT competition. Based on the 993 Turbo but converted to rear-wheel drive to meet regulations, it paired a 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six with a stripped, lightweight chassis built for endurance racing. Visually defined by its bolt-on fender flares and massive rear wing, the GT2 R delivered serious performance in a no-compromise package. With roughly 80 examples produced, it stands as the final air-cooled international GT race car from Porsche.

This 1997 911 GT2 R is one of a reported 10 examples built that year and comes with period racing history, having competed in the 1998 Super Car Cup series where it finished third overall, along with participation in the 2001 Euro GT Series. It has clearly lived a hard life on track, suffering a crash in 1999 that led to a replacement body shell, followed by further structural work in Germany in 2017 including a new forward chassis section, firewall, and floor panels. A February 2025 inspection notes a replacement engine of unknown specification, and the car is offered today as a non-running project. A true “run hard and put away wet” race car.

993 GT2 Rs are few and far between, with the last example to trade being this very car, which sold at RM Sotheby’s Milan sale in May of last year for roughly $236,000. Looking at U.S. comps, an 11,000-mile example brought $800,000 on BaT after failing to sell at Amelia Island in 2023, while a 3,000-mile car sold for $665,000 at Pebble Beach in 2022. All running, complete cars, of course. Our Spotlight Car landed right back where it was, selling at a final bid of $235,000. A case of “pass the potato” it seems.
