2000 911 GT3
Our first unicorn 996 fails to hit the mark as #2 launches for the next shot

Introduced in the late 1990s, the 996.1 GT3 was built to homologate Porsche’s FIA GT3 race car and marked the debut of the GT3 designation. Based on the 996 Carrera but using the stiffer bodyshell of the Carrera 4, it featured weight-saving measures, upgraded brakes, and adjustable suspension. Power came from a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six producing 360 horsepower at 7,200 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm—a race-derived engine also used in the 996 Turbo and rooted in the GT1 program. Not originally sold in the U.S. due to federalization hurdles, the 996.1 GT3 is now eligible for import under the 25-year rule. And here they come.
This Japanese-market 2000 911 GT3 remained with its original owner until it was imported into the United States in 2025. Finished in Biarritz White, this 44,000 km (~27k mi) example sported fixed-back Recaro buckets and looked to be in very nice condition as evidenced by the pictures in the gallery which included paint meter readings and Japanese service history. At least I think that’s service history. My Japanese is a bit rusty (non-existent).
Being that this was the first 996.1 GT3 to hit the auctions here in the US, the comps I have are only for RoW sales, which have averaged just over $80,000 over the last twelve months. With a number of cars offered privately, I had this one pegged at over $120,000 when all was said and done. Unfortunately, it failed to sell at a final bid of $106,996. It’s going to take a few more examples to get a real handle on what the US market is for these rare GT cars. Lucky for us, the next opportunity is below.
