Carbon Buckets couldn't make up for the miles on this one

Good Morning! Right after I hit send I’m jumping on a plane and heading to Cali for the Air | Water auction with Broad Arrow Auctions. Some great cars hitting the block Saturday, so I’ll feature my three favorites in tomorrow’s New & Noteworthy section. If you’re out that way and see me, please say “hello!”

SPOTLIGHT

Unveiled at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, the 987 Boxster Spyder was the lightest model in Porsche’s lineup at the time, weighing in at just 2,811 lbs. This new top-of-the-line version of the Boxster series was a quintessential Porsche sports car as it was light, powerful, and most likely, constantly driven with the top down. Sounds like a modern version of the legendary 550 Spyder to me.

Today’s Spotlight car, this 2011 Boxster Spyder is finished in Black over a Black leather and Alcantara interior and shows 53,000 miles on the odometer. It features a seven-speed PDK transmission, PSM, Carbon-fiber bucket seats, Sound Package Plus, and more for a very nicely packaged car.

The Black paint appears to be in good condition and shows even paint meter readings all around, aside from the hood, which the selling dealer states they don’t think has been repainted. The interior is clean as well, hardly showing any wear, but does have an aftermarket head unit installed. The CarFax is clean and clear and shows recent service over the last few years, but some gaps early on.

The market for PDK 987 Spyders was fairly strong from 2021 through 2022 but appears to have fallen off a bit with bids all below the $60,000 mark this year. Comp-wise, we recently saw a 28,000-mile car sell for $56,000 and a 46,000-mile car sell for $48,300. Both of these cars had “sofa” seats instead of the carbon buckets and the 46k-mile car had an accident on the CarFax.

Our Spotlight car failed to sell at a high bid of $53,000. Yes, it had the carbon buckets, and looks amazing in Black on Black, but that didn’t make up for the mileage. We had to be close to the reserve on this one I would think.

TOGETHER WITH SHEFFIELD WATCHES

Two things that go hand-in-hand? Porsche and watches. Every Porschephile I know is also a watch nerd. And like Porsches, watches can be enjoyed at all price points.

On a recent visit to Pittsburgh, SML subscriber Allan S. tossed me his new Sheffield Allsport watch. Sheffield Watches is a reboot of an old dive watch brand founded in New York in the ‘50s that was synonymous with producing low-price point, quality watches. The weight of the stainless steel case felt robust, as did the feel of the screw-down crown and unidirectional bezel—definitely quality. As for price point, the Sheffield diver punches way above its weight at $108. You can’t buy more watch for the money, period.

And that’s what Sheffield Watches’ founder Jay Turkbas set out to accomplish, reviving the brand's ethos and creating a watch synonymous with quality, technology, and affordability. Taking inspiration from his original Sheffield watch from the ’70s and his 30-plus years of experience in product development and innovation, he knocked it out of the park with a durable watch capable of exploring the depths of the ocean one day and cars & coffee the next. And all at a price point equivalent to the $13 the watch originally cost back then. Take a moment to give Sheffield Watches a look. I know you’ll be just as impressed as I am.

NOTEWORTHY SALES (AND NO-SALES)

  • My interest was piqued when I saw the final bid on this 27,000-mile 2004 911 GT3, but as they say, things are cheap for a reason. This example hails from Canada and as you can clearly see from the picture above, has some discoloration of the paint protection film on the front clip. It also shows a moderate accident on the CarFax and only one service record despite the listing stating it was regularly serviced. At a final bid of $80,000, this new twelve-month low seems about right.

  • While not the lowest sale we’ve seen recently, the $228,000 paid here was pretty light for a 2023 718 Cayman GT4 RS with only 243 miles in Paint to Sample Gulf Orange and Weissach Package. Maybe it was the lack of PCCB brakes and Magnesium wheels on such a highly optioned car. Either way, great looking car.

  • Yeah, I didn’t think this 2008 Boxster S Limited Edition 6-speed was going to go too far when I featured in last week as the car has 97,000 miles, an accident on the CarFax, and had been repainted under previous ownership. While other higher mileage LEs have sold for around $28k, the $22,000 bid on this one seemed fair, considering.

  • The last time we saw Singer’s San Diego Commission was back in September of last year when it failed to sell at a high bid of $964,911. Since then we’ve seen two others fail to sell and two hammer above the $1m mark. Those that sold, though, had the 4.0-liter engine as opposed to this example’s 3.8. Personally, I think this one is the best color combo of all the recent Singer’s on offer. If I could I would. Color > 0.2-liters for me.

  • This 2001 911 Turbo Coupe 6-speed looks fast standing still as it is finished in Paint to Sample Ferrari Yellow and features a TechArt body kit along with GT3 RS wheels. But it’s not all looks. Lurking under the rear decklid is a modified engine with plenty of goodies from the likes of EVOMS and GIAC. While this 68,000-mile example has been well serviced, the body and interior could use a little love.

  • You know I’m a fan of Vesuvio Metallic, especially when it’s on a 996, where it was a normal, but not often ordered color. This Vesuvio 2000 911 Coupe 6-speed has been modified with 18” BC Forged wheels, H&R springs, Koni shocks, Fabspeed exhaust, GT3-spec Throttle Body, and Ksport brake calipers as well as an aftermarket duck tail rear spoiler. But with 94,000 miles on the odometer, I’m thinking this will be an inexpensive, great-looking, 996 for someone.

ICYMI (In Case You Missed It)

  • Porsche Macan Electric reviews are in…. and they are pretty good. I know quite a few Porsche GMs that enjoyed the drive at the launch in Singapore. Can’t wait for my turn!

  • This Porsche 992 by Rezvani is pretty wild looking with its retro looks and Turbfan-style wheels. And it’s got power too, with options from 550 to 750 horsepower.

  • Porsche X Vitra: Pepita-clad chairs for your office and home reference iconic Porsche classics. I want one!
