Porsche 996 Turbo X50 Market Update

Good Morning! I hope your weekend was filled with twisty roads; I know mine was as we finally had some great driving weather here in the Northeast. I also had high hopes for this weekend’s numbers knowing that a Carrera GT was already over $1m before the weekend, but I guess it wasn’t to be. More on that below.

It wasn’t long ago that 996 Turbos languished in the $30-$40,000 range as unloved used cars, but around 2017/2018, the market began to take notice. Fit with the 3.6-liter Mezger derived from the GT1 race car, Turbo’s produced 414 horsepower… until Porsche introduced the X50 package in 2002.

The X50 packages included larger turbochargers and intercoolers and a revised ECU with the X50 tell-tale being quad exhaust pipes peeking out of the rear. At 444 horsepower, the X50 was quite the jump up in power but was also a jump in price at over $17,000 making the X50 a rare bird among the many 996 Turbos produced.

Today’s Spotlight car, this 33,000-mile 2003 911 Turbo Coupe is fitted with Porsche’s X50 package as well as a 6-Speed manual transmission, Xenon headlights, PCM Navigation, BOSE, Carbon Interior Package, and heated front seats. Finished in Seal Grey Metallic over Natural Grey leather, the car is in very good condition inside and out with only minor wear and some “lifting” on the carbon bits on the inside, which is pretty much standard.

It sold yesterday on Bring a Trailer for $79,000. With similar mileage, standard Turbos have traded between low $60s and mid-$80s over the last 12 months with the closets X50 Package car being a 41,000-mile example that sold for $88,000 back in March. That being said, $79,000 seems like a bargain for such a clean X50. I don’t think this is a sign of a weakening market by any means, just a really good deal. Well bought.
